It may surprise you to learn that Staines Swimming Club have their own
"Learn to Swim" scheme specifically designed for the 4 to
8 year old, although it is not limited to this age group. We also
have a "Carer and Toddler" group.
All lessons are held at our purpose built teaching pool (Cygnet Pool)
in the grounds of The Matthew Arnold School, Kingston Road, Staines.
Our main scheme consists of two half-hour lessons each week, parents
can choose from either a Monday & Thursday, Tuesday & Friday or Wednesday
& Saturday combination. Lessons during the week for the complete non-swimmer
start after school at either 3.45pm, 4pm or 4.30pm depending on the day
of the week, on a Saturday lessons start at 9am. We also have a single
day scheme on Saturday afternoon commencing at 2.00pm. Our 'Parent
and Toddler' classes are run on a Thursday afternoon.
Each pupil progresses through the schemes various coloured hat groups
starting with White Hats for the complete non-swimmer, there are 6 colour
hat groups in total before progressing into Main Pool swimming, each lesson
is 30 minutes long. During the lessons at the Cygnet Pool parents
are asked to remain outside, this creates a more formal atmosphere similar
to a classroom, which enhances the child's learning experience and decreases
the chance of distraction.
In the later stages of the scheme swimmers are introduced to some of
the competitive elements of swimming such as tumble turns and competitive
strokes, before progressing into the first main pool group.
The club is affiliated to the Amateur Swimming Association,
this makes the scheme unique within the area as our aim is not limited to
teaching swimming to a competent standard, we also teach the strokes to
a legal standard and teach the competitive elements of swimming.
Apart from Christmas and Easter, the scheme operates continuously from
September to July and breaks only for August during which time, maintenance
work permitting, special one-week crash courses are held. Providing
there is space available, you can join the scheme at any time.
If you require any further information or you wish your child to join
then please contact Kai Merriman at the pool between 4pm and 7pm on 01784
450929, alternatively you can contact Phil Merriman on
