Teaching Scheme Time Table and Structure

3.45pm 4pm 4pm 9am 2pm Non swimmers. The main tasks carried out will be to gain confidence in the water and to kick with the help of an aid. Pupils will learn to remove their feet from the bottom and swim a little on both front and back. Pupils will learn how to float on both front and back.

  • Confidently kick with the help of a float on their front and back.
  • Push and glide from a standing position to a laying position.
  • Perform a star float on both front and back.
  • Perform a mushroom float.
  • Remove legs from the pool floor and swim 5m on front and back.
  • Safely jump feet first into the water from the side of the pool.

  • Confidently swim on their front and back with arm recovery over the water.
  • Push and glide from the poolside on front with face in the water and back with face up.
  • Swim 8m (1 length) on front in a recognisable front crawl style.
  • Swim 8m on back in a recognisable backstroke style.
  • Understand what Breaststroke is and attempt to make circular movements with hands and feet but not necessarily at the same time.
  • Attempt to perform a forward roll.
  • Be able to retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool.

  • Swim 16m (2 lengths) on front in a recognisable front crawl style.
  • Swim 16m on back in a recognisable backstroke style.
  • Be able to perform front crawl kick with arms stretched out (torpedo) for 8m.
  • Understand front crawl breathing and attempt to breath to the side.
  • To understand breaststroke and to be able to attempt the arm and leg action in a recognisable fashion.
  • To perform a forward roll.
  • To be able to perform a quality push and glide on both front and back.
Green 6.30pm 6.30pm 5.45pm 6pm 6pm 11am 4pm
  • Swim 24m (3 lengths) frontcrawl with arm recovery over the water and breathing to the side.
  • Swim 24m backstroke with arm recovery over the water.
  • Show a good understanding of breaststroke and perform 8m to a near legal standard.
  • Show an understanding of butterfly arm and leg action.
  • Be able to perform dolphin kick for 8m with arms stretched out (torpedo).
  • Show knowledge of performing in water starts and turns for all strokes.

  • Swim 32m (4 lengths) Backstroke and Frontcrawl to a near legal standard.
  • Swim 32m Breaststroke to a near legal standard.
  • Understand lane swimming.
  • Perform legal stroke turns.
  • Perform a good Butterfly leg action for 16m and show a clear understanding of the arm action.
  • Teachers will only promote from Red Hats to Main Pool if, in the teachers judgement, the swimmer is able to swim safely in a 25m pool.
